Call for Expressions of Interest - participation in Antarctic and Southern Ocean conference, June 2013

Call for Expressions of Interest – participation in Antarctic and Southern Ocean conference, June 2013
APECS Oceania would like to ascertain whether members would be interested in assisting with the organisation and running of the upcoming Antarctic and Southern Ocean conference. The conference will be held from 24th to 28th June in Hobart.

This is an excellent opportunity for members to gain experience in the running of scientific meetings, to network with polar researchers, and to contribute to the formation of polar science and policy.

It is anticipated that conference registration fees will be discounted for APECS Oceania members willing to assist during the meeting.

Members have the opportunity to participate in the conference in two ways:
1. Co-chair of Discussion Panel

A discussion panel will be held at the end of most theme sessions during the conference sessions (24th to 26th June). The discussions will be led by several co-chairs (the panel) who will make some introductory comments summarising the day’s sessions and then invite the audience to participate in discussions surrounding key issues relevant to each theme.

Proposed conference themes are as follows:

1. Physical Change and Global Connections

2. Science Communication

3. Land and Coastal Marine

4. Frontier Science

5. Marine ecosystems

2. Rapporteurs
The rapporteur duties will involve summarising both the conference sessions and the discussion panels. The intended outputs are brief written summaries of each theme, leading to published Position Statements on key issues and future directions for each theme. Some of these will feed back into the Australian Antarctic Science (AAS) Strategy. It is anticipated that rapporteurs will work in small teams on this task – you would not be expected to take on an entire session by yourself.

To be considered for these roles you do not need not to have expertise in a given field, just an interest in the topic, as we are keen to gain fresh perspectives on the topics.

If one or both of these opportunities are of interest to you, please register your interest by COB FRIDAY 8TH MARCH 2013, by sending an email to info.oceania@apecs.is.

Further information is available on the conference website: http://conference.antarctica.gov.au/

Invitation: Strategic Science in Antarctica Conference and Workshops, Hobart 24-28 June 2013

Strategic Science in Antarctica - A joint Australian and New Zealand conference, being held from June 24 to 26 2013 in Hobart, Tasmania

Invitation: Strategic Science in Antarctica Conference and Workshops, Hobart 24-28 June 2013

Registration and call for abstracts is now open for the ‘Strategic Science in Antarctica’ conference to be held at the University of Tasmania in Hobart from 24-26 June 2013.

The inaugural conference is the result of a collaboration between the Australian Antarctic Division and Antarctica New Zealand, and will feature a number of key note speakers, science presentations, poster displays and social functions.

The conference will provide an opportunity for Antarctic scientists, researchers, policy and support personnel from institutions across Australia and New Zealand to exchange information on existing and planned research, management and policy priorities and to identify opportunities for further collaboration.

The conference will also provide students with an opportunity to discuss their research with leading experts in the field.

Submit your poster, presentation or workshop abstract individually or as part of a group, for the conference and/or the post-conference workshops to be held on 27 and 28 June.

Abstracts may be submitted before 8 April under the following sub-themes: physical change and global connections; marine ecosystems; land and coastal marine; data management; frontier science and science communication.

Register by 10 May 2013 to take advantage of early bird registration rates.

A special reduced registration rate is available for full-time students.

Visit the conference website for further information, to view the call for abstracts and to register.

Alfred Wegener diaries available online

[Polarpol] Wegener diaries available online

http://www.environmentandsociety.org/exhibitions/wegener-diaries

"At its heart are the complete handwritten diaries from the three major Greenland expeditions of German polar researcher Alfred Wegener (1880-1930), made accessible for the first time in digital form. 14 original diaries are completely accessible and also major parts transcribed and translated into englisch. The exhibition also includes photos, documentary film footage, and a transcribed and translated digital edition of some two hundred selected diary pages. Christian Kehrt curated the exhibition and wrote the corresponding texts; Dorit Müller contributed a commentary on the film footage.

Wegener's writings offer first-hand impressions of Greenland's extreme environments, the dynamics of its ice sheet, and the challenges of collecting scientific data under extreme conditions. He reflects on science and technology, relationships with his colleagues, his professional aspirations for a future expedition to the south pole, and even his frustrations:

"But one thing is certain: I will not go on another expedition like this voluntarily. I'm too old for this, even if I'm only 31."

The Environment & Society Portal team edited and produced the exhibition; the Deutsches Museum, which holds the original diaries, provided their digitization. The RCC editorial team translated and copyedited the selections."
